PILATES PRINCIPLES

What are the FOUR core Principles of Pilates?

Concentration - This element brings the mind and body together into Pilates.  By creating a link between the mind and the body, we learn to move better by being more aware of how our body is moving.  Being mindful and "In the moment", we focus our mind on the specific exercise and muscles, this will help us forget about the external stresses and that has so many benefits.

Centring - All movement stems from the core, the "Powerhouse" - our core starts at the shoulders, finishes at the hips and encompasses everything in between - front (chest and six pack) and back (Lats, traps)!!

Alignment - All bodies are built differently but we all have a neutral spine, where our bones line in their optimal position.  All exercises are performed with very specific alignments to maintain control, balance and stability.  For example, when we squat in Pilates, we execute with our correct alignment

Breathing -  "In nose and out mouth" - while breathing into the rib cage and maintaining a flat belly.  Expanding the rib cage also works the intercostal muscles that sit between our ribs.
